My podcasting Setup! What it takes to make KBRS What It Is.

microphone, mixer, cable

My avid listeners have, without a doubt, noticed a marked increase in audio quality at KBRS. My endless pursuit of perfection has led me here. I am NOT done yet and I will continuously update this posting as things change.

I am often asked what equipment and tools I now use to make my podcast… The learning curve to getting super clear audio is is pretty steep. It took me quite a while to get this to a place where I am happy with it. Eventually, what you want to do is get a process down that is super consistent across all of your episodes.

I have tried XLR dynamic stage mics and the Focusrite audio interfaces… I now have a setup I will likely stick with for good. My listeners tell me that the quality of KBRS is so good, that they are annoyed by the quality of other extremely popular radio shows. I like to hear that.

I have switched several things around since the beginning… The equipment I currently use is as follows:

Zoom Podtrack P4- Why? Because I can isolate the phantom power per microphone. I can use it for phone in guests. It has its own storage for audio and it has a preamp to die for. It will push any of the old school dynamic mics like the Shure SM7b and also the ElectroVoice RE20 with no cloudlifter. If you do enough research you will know what I am talking about.

My primary microphone is Lewitt 440 Pure condenser microphone. This microphone is a step up from the microphone you see on the Glenn Beck, and Candice Owens programs.

My secondary microphone is the Lewitt 550 DM for in person guests like Brittany.

My office is also now treated with acoustic foam and I got a big rug for the floor, both of which helped tremendously with room noise.

My DAW is Hindenburg Journalist Pro. I use only one aftermarket plugin. The Bob Perry Noise Gate.

Every episode is leveled, compressed (dynamic range not file size), EQ’d, noise reduced, and noise gated before it is exported at -16 LUFS MONO with the highest quality 320kbps Mp3 encoding.
